Must See NYC – The Empire State Building
The Empire State Building is one of New York’s most iconic sights. Since 1931, tourists have been marveling at the charm and magic of this historic tower, and the building remains one of New York City’s most essential tourism destinations.
Unlike some of the museums and other sites of the City, the Empire State Building can be enjoyed in a single morning, making it an ideal side trip to sneak into your travel plans while you’re already visiting New York. Located on 34th and 5th Avenue, the building is easy to get to for out of town visitors and buses and tours regularly arrange trips anyway. The elevator operates through most of the day and night, between the hours of 8 a.m. and 2 a.m. Eastern, and you get a different outlook of the city based on whether it’s daylight or illuminated by the city lights at night. You’ll need to go through three lines for admittance to the observation deck of the building: a ticket line, a security check, and the wait for the elevator, so buying passes online may be your best bet to avoid lengthy wait times.
The open-air observatory is located on the 86th floor of the building and offers what is arguably the most spectacular view of New York City. There is another enclosed observation deck on the 102 floor, which also sports breathtaking views, but loses some of it’s charm simply due to being glassed in.
The Empire State Building is definitely one NYC excursion you won’t want to miss. Plan for the lines and you’ll avoid some frustrations. And then prepare yourself for seeing the City like you’ve never seen it before.
